How To

How can you implement a Quality Management Plan?

The Quality Management Plan (QMP) was established in ISO 9001. It is a systematic way to improve processes, products and services. It is about how to continually measure, analyze, control, improve, and maintain customer satisfaction.

QMP is a standard way to improve business performance. QMP's goal is to improve service delivery and production. QMPs should cover all three dimensions - Products, Processes, and Services. If the QMP only covers one aspect, it's called a "Process QMP". If the QMP is focused on a product/service, it's called a QMP. The QMP that focuses on customer relationships is known as the "Customer" QMP.

Scope, Strategy and the Implementation of a QMP are the two major elements. They can be described as follows:

Scope: This defines what the QMP will cover and its duration. If your organization wishes to implement a QMP lasting six months, the scope will determine the activities during the first six month.

Strategy: This describes the steps taken to achieve the goals set out in the scope.

A typical QMP comprises five phases: Planning and Design, Development, Construction, Implementation, Maintenance. Here are the details for each phase.

Planning: This stage determines the QMP goals and prioritizes them. All stakeholders involved in the project are consulted to understand their requirements and expectations. Next, you will need to identify the objectives and priorities. The strategy for achieving them is developed.

Design: This stage is where the design team creates the vision, mission and strategies necessary for successful implementation of QMP. These strategies are then put into practice by creating detailed plans.

Development: Here the development team works toward building the necessary resources and capabilities to support the successful implementation.

Implementation: This refers to the actual implementation or the use of the strategies planned.

Maintenance: Maintaining the QMP over time is an ongoing effort.

Several additional items should be added to the QMP.

Participation by Stakeholders is essential for the QMP's continued success. They need to be actively involved in the planning, design, development, implementation, and maintenance stages of the QMP.

Project Initiation - A clear understanding of the problem statement, and the solution is necessary for any project to be initiated. Also, the initiator should understand why they are doing it and what they expect.

Time frame: The QMP's timeframe is critical. The simplest version can be used if the QMP is only being implemented for a short time. However, if you have a long-term commitment, you may require more elaborate versions.

Cost Estimation - Cost estimation is an important part of the QMP. Planning is not possible without knowing the amount of money you will spend. Therefore, cost estimation is essential before starting the QMP.

The most important thing about a QMP is that it is not just a document but also a living document. It changes as the company grows. It is important to review it periodically to ensure it meets all current requirements.
